Coated vs Hot-Rolled Breathable Membranes: How Should Buyers Choose?

Coated vs Hot-Rolled Breathable Membranes: How Should Buyers Choose?

Breathable membranes play an important role in European pitched-roof and wall systems.

They help protect the building envelope from external water while allowing water vapor within the structure to escape. However, not all breathable membranes have the same structure or performance.

Two frequently discussed options are coated breathable membranes and hot-rolled breathable membranes.

Which one is more suitable?

The answer should not be based on the product name alone. Buyers need to consider the application, membrane structure, water resistance, vapor permeability, mechanical strength, fire performance and installation conditions.

What Is a Coated Breathable Membrane?

A coated breathable membrane generally combines a supporting substrate with a functional breathable layer applied through a coating or extrusion-coating process.

Depending on the product design, the supporting layer may provide mechanical strength, while the functional layer helps control water resistance and vapor permeability.

Possible characteristics include:

  • Smooth and relatively uniform surface
  • Flexible product-weight and roll-size options
  • Good balance between water resistance and breathability
  • Customized printing and private-label packaging
  • Cost-effective options for different market levels

The final performance depends on the substrate, coating formulation, coating uniformity, total weight and production control.

Therefore, two coated membranes that look similar may perform differently in actual testing.

What Is a Hot-Rolled Breathable Membrane?

A hot-rolled breathable membrane uses controlled heat and pressure to combine or stabilize its material layers.

Its structure and performance will depend on the selected fibers, functional membrane layer, bonding method and production parameters.

Possible characteristics include:

  • Stable and compact material structure
  • Consistent surface appearance
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Different strength and breathability options
  • Suitable structures for wall and pitched-roof applications

As with coated membranes, the term “hot-rolled” does not by itself confirm the performance level.

Buyers should still check the tested water resistance, Sd value, tensile strength and other relevant technical data.

Key Performance Factors Buyers Should Compare

1. Water Resistance

The membrane should resist external water entering the wall or roofing structure.

For European applications, buyers may request a tested water-resistance classification, such as W1, depending on the intended use and applicable standard.

Water resistance should be confirmed by test data rather than surface appearance alone.

2. Vapor Permeability and Sd Value

A breathable membrane should allow water vapor to move outward through the building structure.

The Sd value provides an important reference for vapor resistance. A lower Sd value generally indicates greater vapor openness, but the required value should be selected according to the complete wall or roof design.

A lower number is not automatically better for every application. The membrane must work correctly with insulation, vapor-control layers and other parts of the building envelope.

3. Mechanical Strength

Tensile strength, elongation and tear resistance affect production, transportation and installation.

The membrane should be strong enough to withstand handling, fastening and exposure during construction without tearing easily.

Where necessary, buyers should also consider dimensional stability and resistance around fixing points.

4. Fire-Retardant Performance

For markets or applications with fire-performance requirements, the standard version of a breathable membrane may not be sufficient.

The complete product structure—including the substrate, functional layer, additives and printing—can influence fire behavior.

Buyers should confirm:

  • The applicable fire test method
  • The tested product structure
  • The test result or classification
  • Whether the production specification matches the tested sample

A simple “FR” description should not replace appropriate technical documentation.

5. UV Exposure and Installation Conditions

During construction, breathable membranes may remain exposed before the exterior covering is installed.

The expected exposure period, local climate, installation temperature and fixing method should therefore be considered during product selection.

UV resistance and installation recommendations should match the actual project conditions.

Coated or Hot-Rolled: Which One Is Better?

There is no universal answer.

A coated breathable membrane may be suitable when the customer requires flexible specifications, private-label customization and a competitive balance between performance and cost.

A hot-rolled breathable membrane may be considered when the buyer prefers a compact, stable structure or has specific requirements for appearance, handling and application.

However, the production method should not be the only purchasing criterion.

The better product is the one that:

  • Matches the wall or roofing application
  • Meets the required water-resistance level
  • Provides suitable vapor permeability
  • Has adequate mechanical strength
  • Meets the necessary fire and UV requirements
  • Remains consistent in repeat production
  • Is supported by appropriate documentation

Questions to Ask Before Requesting a Quotation

To receive a more accurate breathable-membrane recommendation, buyers should provide:

  1. Wall or pitched-roof application
  2. Target market or country
  3. Required water-resistance level
  4. Required Sd value or vapor permeability
  5. Fire-retardant requirements
  6. Expected UV exposure period
  7. Required weight, width and roll length
  8. Printing and packaging requirements
  9. Estimated purchasing quantity

Clear application information helps avoid selecting a membrane based only on weight or price.
