After returning from BATIMAT 2026 in France, we reviewed the conversations, product enquiries and market feedback we received during the exhibition.
One trend was especially clear: European buyers are paying increasing attention to two areas—breathable performance and verified fire-retardant performance.
Rather than selecting one standard membrane for every application, buyers want materials that match the local climate, building structure, installation method and relevant market requirements.
Breathable Membranes for European Wall and Roof Applications
Breathable membranes are widely used in European wall and pitched-roof systems to help protect the building from external water while allowing water vapor within the structure to escape.
Depending on the product structure and application, buyers may choose:
- Extrusion-coated breathable membranes
- Hot-rolled breathable membranes
- Breathable wall membranes
- Breathable roofing membranes
- Water-resistant and vapor-permeable WRB solutions
- Low-Sd, vapor-open building membranes
When evaluating a breathable membrane, European buyers normally look beyond the basic weight or roll size. Water resistance, vapor permeability, Sd value, tensile strength, UV exposure and long-term stability all influence product selection.
The right membrane should provide a balance between external weather protection and moisture management within the building envelope.
Fire-Retardant Performance Is an Important Selection Factor
Fire performance is another important consideration for European building materials.
